Maretha and Alwyn of the Namaqua Athletics club have successfully completed the Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon 2011.

After a grueling 10 days of running a marathon in the Kalahari desert, Alwyn has completed the race in 2nd place over all and Maretha was 1st in the woman's league. Congratulations!

After all the hard work, there is nothing better than relaxing under the shade of the Namaqua Gazebo!

Turning up the heat

Namaqua athletes, Alwyn and Maretha, are turning up the heat at this year's Augrabies Extreme Marathon having finished the 4th stage of the race with outstanding results. Despite the intense heat of the Kalahari desert, Alwyn achieved a 2nd placing and Maretha was the 1st woman to cross the finish line! Keep it up!

I have just finished drinking one of your 8-sided boxes of white wine. I would like to say that I found your wine extremely refreshing and having a bouquet which is amazing for a wine which comes in a tetra pack and not glass bottled. I also have to point out that I bought the wine from my supermarket for EURO 8.78 which is roughly equivalent to 91 RAND. This makes your wine CHEAPER than TWO leading Maltese white bottle wines which are very popular here in Malta. Again congratulations from a very satisfied customer. Regards. Henry A. De Marco

Our wines have always had a certain star quality about them, so it came as no surprise when two of our finest recently made their star debut on the acting front. In Afrikaans artist Le-Lue's latest music video for her song Die Een, Namaqua's Shiraz and Extra Lite make star appearances throughout. According to those on set, the two Namaqua stars were a joy to work with, never failing to get it right on the very first take. Blending Le-Lue's angelic vocals and our lip-smacking wines, the video turned out beautifully, captivating the audience from the very first scene. It's that time of the year again

...and what a great time of the year it is! Namaqua Wines have been hard at work harvesting. We have already received approximately 6 000 ton grapes at Spruitdrift Cellar, where we produce our red wines; and approximately 22 000 ton grapes at Vredendal Cellar, where we produce our white wines.

We even broke some harvest-time records, for instance a stellar amount of 2460 ton grapes that were received on a single day! The trucks had to line up, forming a queue that stretched as far as the railway station. With the amount of effort that we're all putting into this year's harvest, it looks as if every day is going to be the same! Well done to everybody involved.

Namaqua Wines, along with Huisgenoot, sponsored the Huisgenoot Namaqua-Fees that took place from 28 to 30 October 2010 in Vredendal.

Some big names, with the likes of Nádine, Kurt Darren, Albert de Wet, Wynand Strydom, Chereé, Andries Vermeulen, Fredi Nest, Romanz, Jennifer Jones, Heinz Winckler and Ray Dylan, made their appearance on the main stage to mesmerise the crowd with star-struck awe.

This gave Namaqua Wines great exposure and the perfect opportunity to truly share where they come from, with guests from all over South Africa visiting their home turf.

The Namaqua athletics club participated in the 85th official Comrades Marathon that took place on 30th of May 2010.

Approximately 23 000 athletes gathered to jog all the way from Pietermaritzburg to Durban over a distance of 89,25 km. Our team did exceptionally well, with a few medals in the bag and all. Here are their times:

Alwyn Maas received a silver medal with a time of 7:26:51
Adrian Eksteen received a bronze medal with a time of 9:22:31
Henry Scholtz received a bronze medal with a time of 10:02:26
Carin Lochner received a bronze medal with a time of 10:33:26
Adele Maass received a bronze medal with a time of 10:52:09
Hilton van Aarde finished with a time of 11:43:41

Athletes prove they have the X-factor

Namaqua athletes, Alwyn Maas and Maretha van Zyl, participated in the 2010 P ronutro African Xtrail Run, which took place from the 7th to the 9th of May 2010.

The Pronutro African Xtrail Run offered runners a different route every day, although each race would finish in Kleinmond. These three days of adrenalin driven fun in the great outdoors promised to be revitalising for the mind, body and soul.

Day 1: The race started in Betty's Bay and took runners on a 25 km trail through the picturesque Harold Porter Botanic Gardens towards Kogelberg. Even though this was Maretha's first trail run, the Namaqua Team still finished in 2nd place.

Day 2: The race started in the Kleinmond Caravan Park and took runners on a 42 km trail through the Kogelberg Nature Reserve and back - this route was more technical as there were river crossings, as well as minor rock climbing, en route. Luckily, the Namaqua Team were on top form and finished in 3rd place.

Day 3: The race was cancelled due to weather conditions, but the Namaqua Team still managed to finish 2nd place overall in their category.

Well done, you've made us proud.

The Namaqua athletics club participated in the 2010 Safari Half-Marathon - a marathon that should not be taken on half-heartedly.

The 32-member team laced up their joggers and gathered in Wellington on the 1st of May 2010 for the big day. Four team members received silver, while the rest of the team also completed the Safari Half-Marathon with impressive finishing times. The Namaqua team gained a lot of vital experience that will benefit them in the upcoming Pronutro African Xtrail Run, as well as the Comrades Marathon.

Namaqua Wines was well represented, with their logo displayed proudly and prominently during the 2010 Safari Half-Marathon event. There was even a stand, serving South Africa's favourite boeries and Namaqua Wines!

Alwyn Maass has always been a winner

Namaqua's Alwyn Maass received the coveted Sportsman of the Year Award at the Vredendal Sports Banquet on the 23rd of October 2009. He also received an award for being Vredendal Sports Club's Senior Sportsman. Hilton Langehoven (Three-time Gold Medalist, 2009 Paralympic Games) attended the event as guest speaker.

Rittelfees Orak Race 2009

Namaqua Wines manned a water-checkpoint at this year's Rittelfees Orak Race that was held on Saturday 31 October 2009. This race was held as part of the Rittelfees' festivities and saw athletes from various clubs taking part, including twelve runners from the Namaqua Running Club.

The Namaqua Running Club did exceptionally well - the men's team even took the title for their category.

Reik na die Sterre, brought to you by Namaqua Wines, will showcase local musical talent in a variety of styles - to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The show was filmed at T he Barnyard Theatre, Willowbridge, in Durbanville.

The event proved to be very entertaining.

Namaqua Extra Lite is the only Weigh-Less Approved wine range in South Africa. That's quite something, especially because it allows health conscious individuals the guilt-free enjoyment of a glass of wine. As the only range of its kind, Namaqua Extra Lite has drawn a lot of attention. That's why Mary Holroyd, owner of Weigh-Less, decided to find out a little more about the production process of this innovative product.

The management of Namaqua Wines joined Mary on a recent trip to Vredendal for a visit of the Namaqua Cellars. They took a light aircraft from Cape Town International Airport to Vredendal's modest Airstrip. It was off the plane and on the road, with the first stop at the Vredendal Cellar where Namaqua produces its white wines including the Weigh-Less Extra Lite.

Namaqua's facilities are constantly being improved, thus creating consistent growth and expansion of the cellars. The laboratory’s state of the art product analysis equipment allows Namaqua to trace the wine right down to the original section of the specific farm from where its vines were grown.

To help the cellar keep track on the quality of production, samples are drawn from the packing plant on a regular basis to ensure that Namaqua products deliver consistency and quality.

The packaging plant incorporates an extensive automated process with an impressive staff management system. Through this system, the staff members each manage their own section of the production process to help improve efficiency and value.

The Spruitdrift Cellar is where Namaqua's red wines are produced. Here, the multiple production technologies of the cellar ensure the best possible method for winemaking. Namaqua's winemakers utilise systems that give them the versatility to create wines that have the characteristics they desire - yielding wine ranges that are as diverse as the region and its surroundings. It is at the Spruitdrift Cellar where the new Namaqua Weigh-Less Extra Lite Red wine is produced.

Namaqua is one of the few wine producers that has access to the technology that is needed to produce Weigh-Less Approved wine. The facility houses costly equipment that requires high maintenance, while the production involves a complex process. The process involves extracting a precise quantity of alcohol so that all of the traditional flavour and aroma is preserved.

Mary was greatly impressed by the magnitude of the Namaqua Cellars in Vredendal and is now even more confident than ever that her Weigh-Less Approved wines are in capable hands. The Vredendal visit was concluded at Die Keldery Restaurant - this is Namaqua's very own restaurant that offers great quality food and outstanding service.

The flight back allowed a view of the canal system that feeds the vineyards in the region, as well as a nostalgic aerial view of how impressive the Namaqua Wines facilities are.

The 10th Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon

Namaqua Wines was one of the proud sponsors of this year's Kalahari Augrabies Marathon 2009. To add to the occasion - this was the marathon's tenth year running (so to speak). Namaqua's very own winemaker, Alwyn Maass, also took part in the marathon with full backing from Namaqua Wines.

The 10th Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon was held from the 4th to the 10th of October 2009 - a self-sufficient, multi-day event that covers 251 km of the arid Great Kalahari Desert. A group of determined athletes and adventurers from around the world gathered to brave the world of the ancient Bushmen - to run where they ran. The route covered diverse areas, from the fertile vineyards of the Orange River to the desolate sands of the Kalahari Desert, traversing the Augrabies National Park, farmlands and private game parks.

The runners were required to carry all their running supplies, basic medical aid, clothing, food and sleeping gear - travel light, run hard. Overnight camps, water and professional medical backup and crew was supplied at the various check points every 8 - 10 km.

We're proud to say that Alwyn Maass, who has been a winemaker at Namaqua for twelve years, came 4th overall in the 10th Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon - congratulations!

Namaqualand Flower Run 2009

Namaqua Wines sponsored the Namaqualand Flower Run that took place on the 29th of August 2009. Tekkie owners from all over gathered to share their love for the outdoors. The weather complimented the pleasantly warm atmosphere at the race. The two races, one 8 km and one 20 km route, was kick-started at the same time from the scenic Rooibergskloof Farm. The epic 20 km route took the participants to the summit of the Rooiberg. Bare in mind, this wasn't a road race, so the challenge was just so much more straining. It's understood why a great sense of accomplishment was felt by those who completed the race.

Namaqua sponsored the post-event get-together with a whole lot of beverages that was shared among the patrons to celebrate a fulfilling, victorious day in the Rooiberg countryside.

Namaqua boxes the best at Young Wine Show

Namaqua showed off their current vintages at the Young Wine Show 2009. This is a wine show that gives winemakers the opportunity to show what they're made of, literally.

The Young Wine Show 2009 proved to be a great success for Namaqua. We received the SA Champion Other Red Cultivar Trophy for Pinotage with wood and sugar content of more than 5g/liter. Well done, team!

But that's not all!

We won two other Class Categories and, among other medals in our total medal count, received five Gold Medals. It surely is something to be proud of, but we can humbly reflect and say "We share where we come from - and that's all."

Namaqua shares with Tanzania

Joshua Fourie, from Namaqua Wines, encountered a pleasant surprise on his trip to Tanzania. He was greeted by a dedicated force that was building a brand for Namaqua, and not merely selling a wine.

Joshua was overwhelmed by the passion of the staff. He attended a prize-giving, where "WE BOX THE BEST! NAMAQUA!" was chanted by the passionate crowd every time before an award was handed over. The people in Tanzania are so proud of the Namaqua Wine Brand, that they even put up a Namaqua VIP Lounge. Now that's classy.

Something that really struck Joshua, was that they even painted their own Namaqua Branding on the walls...

To quote Joshua: "WOW!"

The SA Young Wine Show 2008 is one of the wine shows that has become inseparable from the South African Wine Community. The SA National Wine Show Association presents the SA Young Wine Show annually, aiming to give winemakers the opportunity to showcase the best of their vintages. At this year's event, Namaqua made a rather reputable mark - walking away with six awards in the Olifantsrivier Group. Among the categories they thrived in, were Sweet White Table Wine, Red Wine, Shiraz, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Dry Red. Namaqua was quick on the draw during this wine show(down) for the young guns.
